Curbstoning In The News

NBC Bay Area News followed a California DMV investigator as he tried to put the brakes on curbstoning in San Jose. This four-minute segment reveals a curbstoned vehicle for sale with a deployed airbag, and tells the story of how one couple was defrauded out of $23,000 for a vehicle that stopped working – it turned out to have been wrecked, stripped of its VIN tags, and repainted to look like new.

As the report says, these situations put dangerous vehicles on the road – perhaps driving around you or your family.

The report also demonstrates the power of search engines as a tool for identifying curbstoners.

Here’s a “Behind The Scenes Extra” – It was Stop Curbstoning that put the reporter, Garvin Thomas, in touch with the curbstoner victim. We’re grateful to her for telling her story on the air – and we’re glad we were able to play a part in giving her a platform to speak out so other unsuspecting car buyers won’t fall prey to a fraudulent vehicle seller.

The reverse lookup of the phone number shown in the video sometimes does not work either. The curbstoners will try to obfuscate the number in the ad. Try searching the last 4 digits instead. Or alternatively, call the seller and ask "I'm interested in the car for sale". Don't say the make/model. If the seller asks "Which car?" hang up immediately.

Where can we go to report such individuals in order to help myself and the community? I feel like a hopeless college student in this appalling used car market.
