Law of Unintended Consequences
Posted on Fri, Aug 05, 2011
The Clayton County (GA) Board of Commissioners recently amended a previously passed anti-curbstoning law that banned people from parking cars for sale on public streets. Now licensed used car dealers will be exempted from the law, which brings enforcement in line with an existing exemption for new car dealers.
It appears the exemption is designed primarily to address the fact that some car lots are built right up to the edge of the street, and also that dealers need to temporarily park vehicles on the street right next to their dealerships. The exemption does not appear to be intended to allow licensed car dealers to use public streets as a storefront or to park excess inventory on a long-term basis.
As the article from the Clayton News Daily notes, "As a result of the amendment, county officials said, the ordinance can now work to solely curb the activity it was originally intended to prevent — unlicensed car sales."
We applaud Clayton County for doing its part to stop curbstoning!
